Bio

Assistant Coach Billy Clontz enters his 11th year in 2023-24 at Ohlone College.  He joined Coach Curran's staff in August of 2013, traveling down the coast from Corvallis, OR.

While at Ohlone, the Renegades have had tremendous success with their offense.  Coach Clontz has mentored two CCCAA State Batting Champions (Jeter Ybarra, 2022; Bradlee Preap, 2020), and two NorCal Batting Champions (Ryan Ruley, 2017; AJ Curtis, 2018).  The Renegades have put up historic numbers and have finished ranked #1 in the state in numerous offensive categories since 2017.  Coach Clontz has helped the Renegades to Conference Championships in 2015, '17, '18, '19, '21, and '22.  The Renegade offense also has helped Ohlone to Regional Championships in 2015, '17, '18, '19, '22 and Super Regional Championships in 2017, '18, '19, and '22.  The 2020 team, which led the state of California in nine offensive categories before the season was called short due to the Coronavirus, finished 19-2.

According to Coach Curran, "He is the best in the business at developing relationships, understanding each of his hitters, and developing them over time.  All I do is set the offensive philosophies with our hitters -- attack plans, gameday goals, offensive jobs, etc. -- but when it comes to the day-to-day stuff and the fine tuning of our hitters, that is all Coach Clontz.  He has done an amazing job of helping guys understand their swings and making the necessary adjustments to help them reach their goals.  I, and we at Ohlone, are lucky to have him.  He is a great friend, a great person, and great coach."

Coach Clontz spent his entire childhood in Oregon, played there, and even coached there.  The native of Corvallis starred at Corvallis High School and then moved on to play at Mt. Hood Community College (2006-08).  From there, he moved on to NCAA Division II Western Oregon, where he helped lead the Wolves to 34-14 (2009) and 34-15 (2010) seasons.  His best season came in 2009 as a junior when he hit .357 (41-115) in 33 games while rapping out 8 doubles and 3 homeruns.

After his time at Western Oregon, Coach Clontz returned to Mt. Hood and immediately began coaching, where he assisted with hitters and infielders during the 2010, ‘11, and ’12 seasons.  Mt. Hood is a nationally renowned program that has won over 20 conference championships since 1971.  Clontz has also been extremely busy on the summer circuit where he coached three summers for the Corvallis Knights (2010, ’11, ’13), who played their home games at Oregon State University and a summer with the Klamath Falls Gems (2012).  While coaching with the Knights, he helped lead them to West Coast League Championships in both 2011 and ‘13.   He also spent two summers as the head coach of the Kelowna Falcons (2014, '15), who like the Knights, play in the NCAA-affiliated West Coast League.  Coach Clontz was selected as Coach of the Year in his second season in Kelowna.

Clontz currently resides in Gilroy, with his wife Kiersten, and their three small sons.
