Ohlone named No. 15 seed for Northern California Regional Playoffs

REGIONAL BRACKET

The run to the state championships officially begins for the Ohlone College baseball team.

On Sunday, Ohlone received the No. 15 seed for the upcoming 2023 Northern California Regional Playoffs. The Renegades will travel to face No. 10 Los Medanos College in a best-of-three-game series that is scheduled to begin on Friday (May 5) at 2:00 p.m. in Pittsburg. Game 2 is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. with a third game, if necessary, to start at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices for the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) postseason event at Los Medanos are $12 for general admission and $8 for all identified students, faculty, staff, senior citizens age 60 and over, and children under 12 years old.

The Renegades return to the postseason for the fifth consecutive season under head coach Mike Curran. Ohlone won a share of the Coast Conference South Division championship, its sixth straight conference title, with a 14-4 record and enter the playoffs with a 28-11-1 overall mark. The Renegades are currently riding a seven-game winning streak.

Ohlone looks to improve on last season's success that saw the team advance to the State Championship Final Four for the fifth time in program history, its first since 2017. The Renegades are also in search of their second state title overall after winning it all in 2010.

Los Medanos captured the Bay Valley Conference championship this season by going 18-3 and brings a nearly identical 29-11 overall record into the postseason.

Ohlone and Los Medanos are no strangers when it comes to the regular season and playoffs. The two squads met in the 2023 season opener on Jan. 27 with Los Medanos rallying for an 11-10 victory. Last year, Ohlone eliminated Los Medanos from the postseason by winning two out of three games in the Super Regionals in Fremont.

The winner of the opening series will advance to a three-team, double-elimination Super Regional on May 11-13. Winners of the Super Regionals meet in a three-game Regional Finals series on May 19-21 with a trip to the state championships on the line.

The state championships are scheduled for May 27-29 at Folsom Lake College.
