Weekly Roundup; April 9th edition

BASEBALL SWEEP-OVER PARTY, ANYONE?
Baseball can seem like art when pitchers pound the strike zone, fielders make the plays, and hitters punish mistakes on lush green spring afternoons. Ohlone's latest creation came in the form of an 8-2 win over Cabrillo on April 7, which concluded a stylistic three-game sweep of the Seahawks.
The Renegades (25-6, 9-0 Coast Pacific) lashed 10 hits, received a quality start from Peter Van Loon, strong relief work from Stirling Strong and Joseph Jennison, and committed no errors on defense.
Ryan Walstad set the tone with a two-run triple in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Cody Nisbet and AJ Curtis. Designated hitter Michael Gallagher upped the lead to 3-0 in the fifth with a run-scoring single.
Left fielder Justin Clark doubled his pleasure in the triumph. He hit a two-run double in the sixth, scoring Ryan Probst and Gallagher, and blasted an RBI double in the seventh.
Van Loon (4-1) struck out five and walked none over six innings. He scattered five hits and surrendered one earned run. Strong worked two hitless innings, and Jennison struck out two and allowed no hits.
Leadoff AJ Curtis did his job. He was 2 for 3, including a double, with two walks and two runs scored, and Probst scored three times.
Also, the Renegades beat Cabrillo 7-0 on April 3 and 5-2 on April 5.
In the 7-0 triumph, Ethan Skuija (8-1) tossed a seven-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks. His eight pitching wins put him one win behind a trio who share the state lead.
Curtis and Dalton Vanhille both had two RBIs.
In the 5-2 win, Clark was 3 for 3 with a run scored, Vanhille was 2 for 4 with two runs, and Probst had two doubles, Nisbet had two RBIs and shortstop Miguel Cazares had two hits, a run, and an RBI.
Starter Brian Martinez (7-1) struck out three and scattered eight hits over five innings. Andrew Amato (3 IP) and Strong (1 IP) both allowed no runs in relief.

SOFTBALL
After splitting a pair of conference crossover games last week, the Renegades will return to action with a doubleheader at Bay Valley Conference leader Solano (14-12-1, 6-0) on April 10.
Ohlone pitcher Ana Beard is ranked No. 2 in the state in earned run average at 0.94. Holly Gonzalez is ranked fifth (1.11 ERA), and Karen Didio is No. 13 (1.71 ERA).
The Renegades (24-8, 7-2 Coast-North) saw their eight-game winning streak end with a 6-3 defeat on April 5 to Coast-South power Monterey Peninsula, which won for the 14th consecutive time. Ohlone took a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third innings, but Monterey scratched out a run in the bottom of the third and broke it open with five in the fifth.
Ohlone's Karen Didio pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings in relief and was 1 for 2 with a double and RBI. Meida Taulalatasi, Selena Gomez and Brooke Niewoehner all singled and scored. Taulalatasi is tied for 34th in the state with a .453 batting average.
Ohlone had better luck in a thrilling 3-2 win over West Valley on April 3. Taulalatasi had the big blow with a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth. Catcher Alyssa Montoya scored the dramatic winning run in the seventh and was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Didio fired a four-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk.
Ohlone trails first-place College of San Mateo (28-4, 8-1) by just one game in the Coast-North standings.
SWIMMING
Craig Harkey had a nice swim at the "Last Chance" Invitational at Chabot College, taking first place in the men's 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:19.61. He was also third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.79.
Ohlone's Jamie Ng had a strong showing with a first-place finish in the women's 100 freestyle in a time of 57.51. Ng was second in the 50 freestyle (26.06), just behind Taylor Sargis of Santa Rosa (25.90).
